Why see an Endodontist?
- Endodontists receive an additional 2-3 years of specialized training beyond dental school, focusing exclusively on diagnosing and treating tooth pain and performing root canal procedures. Dr. Vilkin and Dr. Glodowski both have teaching experience that is invaluable when communicating with patients and referring doctors.
- Conventional Root Canal Treatment is a highly successful procedure used to save an infected or damaged tooth. The procedure involves making a small hole in the top of the tooth, similar to having a filling or restoration placed. Through this hole, the center of the tooth is cleaned out and then filled with a biocompatible rubber-like material called Gutta-Percha. In most cases, your dentist will then recommend placing a crown on the tooth.
- Root Canal Retreatment is required when a previous root canal treatment is failing. The procedure includes removing any old restorations, making a hole in the crown, and then removing the old root canal filling material (Gutta-Percha). The inside of the tooth is thoroughly recleaned, and any other findings are addressed.
- Apicoectomy or root-end surgery is a minor surgical procedure in the gums adjacent to a tooth that has already had root canal treatment, and retreatment through the top of the tooth will not achieve the desired goals. The procedure saves a tooth by removing the tip of the root, the apex, and then sealing it with a bioceramic cement.
